AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA:
AUDACIOUS

John-Storgards_320px.jpg

Fearless violinist/conductor John Storgards is renowned for the ‘raw, incendiary power’ of his playing. Now, he’ll introduce you to new music that’s every bit as exciting as his performances when he guest directs the always edgy Australian Chamber Orchestra. Here’s your chance to experience music like nothing you’ve heard before. Influential Japanese composer Ichiyanagi studied with the iconoclastic composer-philosopher John Cage and was married to Yoko Ono. With that pedigree, you’d expect something intriguing and Ichiyanagi delivers with a blend of old and new, east and west. From Lithuania, Juozapaitis highlights dazzling colours while Finnish composer Hameenniemi demands jazzy improvisation from the orchestra. Lutoslawski and Sibelius are more familiar but still offer plenty to tickle the ears. Contemporary music is gripping, strange, unearthly and unpredictable but it’s never dull. Melbourne concerts 8 and 9 June – see aco.com.au for details.
