In recent years renowned composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda has presented a few examples of his work as part of Melbourne Festival: in 2005, his powerful film concert C4I and the affecting screen work formula [ver 2.3] then in 2006, the stunning performance piece Voyage as part of the collective dumb type.
Ikeda’s work has been exhibited and presented worldwide, including Tate Modern in London and the Centre Pompidou and the Museum of Modern Art both in Paris. He has won many important prizes, including the Ars Electronica Golden Nica in 2001.
Later this year, Ikeda will take up the mantle for the groundbreaking Dream Amsterdam initiative. His engagements include a number of performances and the presentation of his first large-scale artworks for public spaces which mark a new direction in his artistic career.
Dream Amsterdam is an initiative and concept of director and curator Jamain Brigitha. It is an annual event that gives an internationally acclaimed contemporary visual artist the opportunity to use Amsterdam as a source of inspiration, studio, material, décor and exhibition space.
Ikeda will use pure light as the material for his interventions in various secret locations across Amsterdam. Intensely bright light installations will appear mysteriously, connecting a constellation of points across the cityscape. The energy used for the light installations is generated from sustainable, recycled resources.
