The London Philharmonic Orchestra has long been recognised as one of the best ensembles in the world, an assertion borne out by continued acclaim from audiences and critics alike. It has been a long time since Melbournians have enjoyed a visiting orchestra of this standing.
To mark the occasion, Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra present two exclusive concerts for Melbourne Festival.
On Saturday 10 October the LPO performs Australian composer Graeme Koehne's Powerhouse, Ravel's Piano Concerto in G featuring the world renowned pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.
Sunday 11 October sees Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto featuring guest violinist Vadim Repin, Beethoven's Symphony No 3 ‘Eroica' and Wagner's Die Meistersinger Overture.
"What impresses about Vladimir Jurowski almost as much as his insouciantly assured conducting technique and the high intelligence of his interpretations is the boldness that he shows in programming the London Philharmonic's concerts."
The Times
"This was an orchestra on fire. If Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra go on producing concerts this good we are in for a white-knuckle ride."
