For one awe-inspiring night, Richard Tognetti leads the Australian Chamber Orchestra, ANAM orchestra and The Consort of Melbourne vocal ensemble, as they join forces with award-winning cinematographer Jon Frank in a majestic exploration of what happens when one becomes many.
In a crowd we are everything and nothing: a single being and a uniform mass. Capable of changing the world – or destroying it. With his hallmark flair, ACO Artistic Director Richard Tognetti has conceived a program that ranges across Debussy, Chopin, Shostakovich and Dean. Jon Frank’s luminous time-lapse imagery takes us into the strange, vexing dynamics of crowds: large and small, quiet and violent.
A lyrical melding of cinema and symphony, directed by Matthew Lutton and backed by the might of almost 100 musicians and vocalists, The Crowd poses the elusive question: what is it we feel when we are part of a crowd? Is it fear or empowerment? Do we lose ourselves, or find our real selves?
