REALISM

the Arts Centre and Melbourne Theatre Company invite you to a free rehearsed reading of Wal Cherry Award 2007 - Best New Play REALISM
Written by Paul Galloway Directed by Peter Evans Developed with the support of the Cybec foundation
It is the summer of 1939 and in a small Moscow theatre a company begin rehearsals of a new play commemorating the leader’s sixtieth birthday. Of course, it’s not easy creating art when the secret police have informers everywhere and the wrong word can get you sent to the gulag, but if you are a Soviet Artist working towards the Radiant Future the old showbiz maxim ‘The show must go on!’ is an order direct from Stalin.
Set at a time of deep spiritual exhaustion just after the Great Terror, Realism is a comedy of nerves, a backstage farce set in a pressure cooker. It’s about the spirit that makes art live and the forces that want to kill it.
Rehearsed Reading the Arts Centre, Fairfax Studio 31 August, 2pm Free Entry
House wine and beer for $3 or 15% off a meal on presentation of your Realism program at the Arts Centre’s Café Vic after the reading.
