This program is designed for VCA students as well as professional practitioners. Space is strictly limited in these workshop sessions, and places will be given on a first come, first served basis. Participation in the workshops is BY EMAIL APPLICATION ONLY.

KARTIK SESHADRI & ARUP CHATTOPADHYAY



Kartik Seshadri is a world-renowned sitar virtuoso, composer, educator and the foremost disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar.
Arup Chattopadhyay is the premier disciple of maestro Pandit Shankar Ghosh and is one of the most outstanding and sought after tabla artists of the younger generation. Kartik Seshadri and Arup Chattopadhyay perform 2 concerts together in the BMW Edge as well as 1 concert at Frankston Arts Centre as part of the 2008 Melbourne International Arts Festival.

These incredible artists will conduct a lecture demonstration for VCA students in the Improvisation Stream as well as professional practitioners. This workshop will involve a discussion around technique, improvisation within performance and will provide an opportunity for sitar & tabla demonstrations.

INTERPRETI VENEZIANI
(Interpreti Veneziani Baroque Ensemble in Concert)



Playing original instruments and specialising in Baroque music, Interpreti Veneziani has earned an indisputable reputation in Venice, playing up to 350 concerts a year to 60,000 subscribers in the San Vidal Church. This unique and world-renowned ensemble will play 3 distinct concerts in the BMW Edge for the 2008 Melbourne International Arts Festival.

This lecture demonstration at VCA will be for Improvisation Stream students as well as professional practitioners and will explore the following works:

ANDREW STERMAN
(Book of Longing, Andrew Sterman & Mick Rossi)

Saxophonist, flutist and composer, Sterman has played with many of the greatest jazz singers, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams and Aretha Franklin and has performed with countless jazz masters. His original music has also garnered critical praise and attracted audiences in New York and across the globe. Andrew Sterman has been a member of the Philip Glass Ensemble since 1992 and will be performing with them in Book of Longing as well as in a duo performance with fellow Philip Glass Ensemble member, Mick Rossi, in The Spiegeltent as part of the 2008 Melbourne International Arts Festival.

This workshop will focus on working with a variety of ways to develop increasingly personal directions in improvisation, and will include participants playing and interacting in a performance way.

Event – Workshops for young composers on writing for the voice.  Having worked with experienced composers, Hannigan will host a round table talk for Melbourne University composition students and young composers in Melbourne. The discussion will cover looking at score and vocal writing through the last 3 centuries, with a focus on virtuoso writing, tessitura, and treatment of the passagio and also the different categories of voice (fach), IPA, extended vocal techniques, notation. For undergraduate and postgraduate composers.
